Free shuttles to the coast from San Francisco urban libraries, community centers, and the Veterans Administration were provided to over 600 people by the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy with support from a recent WHALE TAIL® grant. These community shuttles helped overcome transportation barriers and increase park access by nontraditional users. They left from places like the Mission, Chinatown, and Western Addition branch libraries and took people to Golden Gate National Recreation Area parks like Alcatraz, the Marin Headlands, and Lands End. The trips included programs led by naturalists and materials offered in three different languages. The shuttles also transported people from neighborhood groups like Bayview Network for Elders and a childcare program in San Francisco's Tenderloin District. And finally, they took groups of veterans who reported that being in the outdoors helped them with PTSD and they were able to appreciate nature as a source of healing.
