Westport-Union Landing State Beach

Photo of Westport-Union Landing State Beach

This park was named for two communities in Mendocino County: Westport, a sawmill town, is still in existence, and Union Landing which now consists of only a few buildings. Both of these settlements were famous for supplying lumber, railroad ties, and tan oak bark to the schooners anchored offshore. The schooners were loaded with forest products by means of cable tramways and chutes from the bluffs.

Day-use and camping facilities in the park are spread along a narrow ocean bluff, between Highway One and the Pacific. The main day use area is at the mouth of Howard Creek, which bisects a sandy beach. The south end of the beach can be reached by a path down the bluff from the parking area south of Howard Creek. The north end of the beach is reached by a wooden stair from a second parking area north of the creek; a wooden boardwalk overlooking the beach and picnic area is wheelchair accessible. There are tidepools to explore, and anglers cast nets for smelt as the fish approach shore to spawn. Those willing to brave the cold and sometimes rough waters go abalone diving or spear fishing.

North and south of Howard Creek, 100 primitive campsites are spread along the open bluff with views of rugged coast and mountains. Sunset vistas are outstanding. First-come, first-served - no reservations.
