California currently has 1,457 points of public access to our 1,271 mile-long shoreline.

The California Coastal Act guarantees beach access to the public:

"The legislature...finds and declares that the basic goals of the state for the coastal zone [include]... Maximiz[ing] public access to and along the coast and maximiz[ing] public recreational opportunities in the coastal zone consistent with sound resources conservation principles and constitutionally protected rights of private property owners."

The California Coastal Commission has published several detailed guide books to beach access, which also include fascinating articles on the natural and cultural history and resources of our coast, in the California Coastal Access Guide and the Experience the California Coast series. Newly available is the easy-to-use, mobile web app found at YourCoast.org. The app is available via smart phone, tablet, or personal computer and it contains information on all the accessways, displayed on colorful base maps, with details on the physical setting, facilities, and visitor activities - such as sandy beaches or tide pools, disabled facilities and wheelchair accessible trails, restrooms and parking, campgrounds, trails and visitor centers.

Plan a visit to anywhere along the California coast by visiting the FREE YourCoast web app at YourCoast.org.
