Public Education Program Impact

About the Public Education | Public Education Media Page | Recursos En Español

The California Coastal Commission's Public Education Program works to increase public knowledge of coastal and marine resources and to engage the public in coastal protection and restoration activities. The Program has been supported by the WHALE TAIL® License Plate since 1999. California vehicle owners can join more than 232,000 of their friends and neighbors in supporting these programs by purchasing a plate. California tax payers can also support the Public Education Program by donating to the Protect Our Coast & Ocean Fund on the State Tax Form.

Through WHALE TAIL® Grants and direct programming and events, the Public Education Program has a wide and lasting impact on people of all ages throughout California. Below is an attempt to quantify some of these accomplishments, as of December 2017:

  • 3.5 million participants in Public Education and WHALE TAIL® Grants programs
  • 211,500 students on field trips
  • 47.6 million pounds of trash collected from beaches and inland shorelines
  • 63 beach wheelchairs funded
  • 100,000 Clean & Green Boater Kits distributed (since 2000)
  • 1,490 pounds of fishing line collected for recycling (since 2009)
