Energy, Ocean Resources, and Federal Consistency Division
Alexis Barrera (she/her)
At Coastal Commission since 2020
About Alexis:
Alexis earned her undergraduate degree in earth and planetary science with a focus in marine
science and then a master's degree in biology. She learned about the Coastal
Commission while working as a California Sea Grant Fellow at the California
Coastal Conservancy, which is also where she also found a passion for public
service through technical science. In her current role as an environmental scientist
for the Energy, Ocean Resources, and Federal Consistencies program, her projects
include offshore development, offshore energy activities, and habitat management and
restoration on federal lands. Alexis researches energy, ocean resources, and federal
consistency policy issues; identifies threats to coastal resources; and develops
recommendations to the Commission to ensure that coastal resources are protected,
restored, and enhanced.
Alexis's personal background has strengthened her passion for environmental science.
She's proud to be a first-generation woman of Mexican descent in a field that's
traditionally been dominated by Bill Nye types, and shares her story with students of
color pursuing similar careers. She's happy to be protecting resources that are special
to individuals for different reasons, from family memories to cultural significance.
