You can continue to care for and protect our coast and ocean even during this busy holiday season!

The holidays often bring with them extra consumption as we rush to fulfill expectations of gifts and travel, but they also can offer opportunities to celebrate our natural resources. Here are some tips. Please share your ideas with us on Facebook or Twitter!

Celebrate the coast with your gifts:
  • Natural history museum or aquarium tickets and memberships
  • A hotel stay or camping trip to the coast
  • Coastal access guides or coastal artwork
  • A coastal adventure, such as kayaking, surf lessons, or whale watching
  • A coastal photography or painting class, trip, or related equipment
Spend time with your loved ones at the coast:
  • Create a tradition of a holiday afternoon hike or a First Day Hike on January 1st
  • Volunteer together to restore habitat or maintain trails
  • Practice a new skill (or teach an old skill to family or a friend), such as bird watching, sand castle building, orienteering
  • Celebrate the changing season or the new year with a coastal sunrise or sunset (and a mug of something warm to drink!)
Conserve and reduce as you give and travel, whether at the coast or inland:
  • Reuse old wrapping paper and ribbon, and wrap packages in reusable cloth such as napkins, scarves, handkerchiefs. Make the packaging part of the gift.
  • Seek out gifts with minimal packaging and less plastic waste.
  • Look for local and organic foods for your holiday table.
  • Use durable plates, cutlery and cloth napkins for your holiday parties. Borrow from friends and get creative (jam jars can serve as playful glassware in a pinch).
  • The train is a pollution-reducing way to travel and can be a sightseeing adventure all on its own!

Thank you for protecting our coast and ocean, in winter, spring, summer, and fall!
Happy holidays!
