Devil's Slide Trail

This new segment of the California Coastal Trail was made possible by construction of a Highway One tunnel bypass south of Pacifica in San Mateo County. Since its construction in 1937, this section of the Highway had been plagued by landslides, often causing major transportation headaches for San Mateo Coast residents. A long-debated tunnel bypassing the slide area was finally completed in 2013. The new tunnel created an amazing opportunity to open up the old highway and its awe-inspiring views to hikers and bikers, and to get California closer to a continuous Coastal Trail. This 1.3 mile-long trail was opened to the public in March 2014.

The Devil's Slide Trail has many places to rest and enjoy your surroundings, including a bench dedicated to Peter Douglas, California Coastal Commission Executive Director from 1985 to 2011.

Devil's Slide is about 15 miles south of San Francisco and 30 miles north of Santa Cruz. To access the trail, parking lots can be found on either end along Highway One, at the south edge of Pacifica as well as north of Gray Whale Cove State Beach and Montara. There is a free weekend shuttle from the City of Pacifica. Find more information and transit and driving directions at www.devilsslidecoast.org.
