Los Angeles Basin Contaminated Sediments Task Force

Summary of Sediment Screening Thresholds Committee Meeting
May 16, 2001

Attendees: David Moore (MEC), Cynthia Erickson (URS), Nick Buhbe (AMEC), Peggy Myre (EVS), Guangyu Wang (SMBRP), John Johnsen (Hart Crowser), Steve Bay, (SCCWRP), Devin Moeller (Premier), Corine Severn (Premier), Michael Lyons (LARWQCB), Paul Johansen (POLA), Steven John (EPA), Maile Gee (CCC, by telephone)

Meeting Notes:

(1) Summary of report inventory and recommendations for inclusion in the database (Myre/EVS):

Inventory Report complete (60 reports identified, 56 reviewed;15 reports identified in the RFP have not been received by EVS yet).  Criteria (recommendations) – sorted by priority, geographic location and date.  All data sets (including those with just chemistry data) are included in the database.  Ranking and recommendation on whether to incorporate each study (first rank– most criteria met, some QA issues; second rank – lacking some biological data; third rank – not recommended for inclusion).

Still needed are permit and disposal (location, volume, etc.) information – should be provided to EVS by the end of June.

Planned schedule: initial database delivered by end of July; all primary data sets with matching sediment/toxicity data will be incorporated by end of July; all secondary data sets (as many as possible) before end of July; final database completed (estimated) by end of August.

(2) Description of modifications to the database format/structure to accommodate the data (Bay/SCCWRP):

Sediment core data is frequently provided as a spatial composite of multiple cores, also with variable depths and number of sampling horizons.   Multiple coordinates per sample make station IDs ineffective.  Database structure is to be modified to add/revise fields to capture such relevant data as horizon depth and a study area ID (reflecting composite area/polygon).  Will also record individual core location and descriptions.

Toxicity test – results of significant testing not recorded.  Will add table to capture summary toxicity data (significant toxic response as driven by regulatory compliance) and percent control response (note: as discussed by the subcommittee, percent reference response will also be recorded in the database.  Additionally, type of study, be it dredging, monitoring, etc., will be included.  Significance, statistically or regulatory, will be defined).

(3) Integration of electronic sediment quality and stormwater databases (Bay/SCCWRP):

Two phase approach is anticipated: Phase I captures priority data for Sediment Quality Guidance (SQG) assessment (matching chemistry/biological data); regional monitoring data (available within the next two months will be included by July 31, 2001).  Phase II: includes other relevant sediment data (not critical for SQG assessment, may not be available currently, and/or assessment of data suitability is necessary, to be accomplished by June 2002).

Workplan for electronic database entry:  work to be conducted by EVS in coordination with SCCWRP.  Adjustment to the schedule of data compilation deliverables to support SQG project: by July 31, 2001 – dredging studies with matched chemistry/toxicity data; by September 2001 – remaining dredging studies (second priority studies).

Next Sediment Thresholds Subcommittee meetings: June 19, 2001, 10am to 1pm, @ POLA conference room; and, July 11, 2001, 10am to 12noon, @ POLA conference room.
