Marine Education Program: The intent of our Marine Education Program is to educate students within the community about the effects of water quality on the marine environment. Channelkeeper’s Marine Education Program offers hands-on lessons about kelp ecology and reproduction and eelgrass beds. As part of our Marine Education Program we place eco-carts, self-contained aquaria units, in classrooms. The eco-carts are used to grow eelgrass from seeds and to house kelp forest organisms. We usually ask for a one-year commitment from the teacher/classroom, but are flexible and willing to work with classes for one lesson as well. The curriculum currently ties in with the state science standards for seventh grade, but we also work with elementary and high schools.

Grades 4 through 9, General Public

Volunteer Opportunities

  Program:
Ventura Stream Team and Goleta Stream Team
Description:
The Ventura and Goleta Stream Team provide a monthly opportunity for volunteer involvement in an ongoing water quality monitoring program. Our program has three goals: 1) to establish baseline information on a watershed level; 2) to establish a trained volunteer monitoring base; and 3) locate previously unidentified point-sources of pollution. The data includes on-site measurements of dissolved oxygen, turbidity, conductivity, pH, temperature and flow. Additionally, water collected at each site is analyzed back at Channelkeeper's laboratory for three bacterial indicators, and for the common pollutants nitrate and phosphate.

Throughout the year

Program:
Goleta Beach Cleanup
Description:
Santa Barbara Channelkeeper has teamed up with the Ocean Conservancy's National Marine Debris Monitoring Program in order to submit records of our collected trash to the national database. We have been picking up trash along Goleta Beach since July 2001. This activity takes about 1.5 hours and is perfect for after-school groups. Channelkeeper provides plastic gloves, trash bags, and datasheets.
