Three days of fun and learning about natural history, identifying wildlife sharing knowledge and much more.
Education Programs:
Wetland Discovery Nature Trail:
Open year-round this self-guided walk is 0.85 miles in length. There are 14 learning stations that correspond to an illustrated pamphlet. The trail includes a viewing platform that allows visitors to get a birds-eye view of the surrounding wetland habitats. Group reservations requested. Guided tours by appointment (minimum 18 persons), please call (530) 846-7505 for reservations. The trail is wheelchair accessible. Open year-round.
Flyway Trail and Wildlife Viewing Hides:
This 2.0 mile trail includes two buildings (viewing hides) which overlook seasonally flooded ponds ( best used during fall & winter). These hides provide great opportunities for wildlife viewing and photography, in a controlled environment, with minimal disturbance to this wildlife setting. One of the viewing hides is adjacent to an existing parking lot and easily accessed by all. Open year-round.
3-Mile Auto Loop:
This 3.0 mile tour through the sanctuary allows wildlife viewing opportunities from the comfort of your vehicle. As one of our most popular experiences in the winter, the Auto Loop can make your visit a pleasure, even in inclement weather. Open year-round.
Exploring the Wetlands:
Program includes four learning stations: Wildlife Investigations, Bird Adaptations, Plant Investigations, Water Investigations, and a nature walk. Programs focus on standards for 2-6 grades but other grades can be accommodated. Available Sept April. Reservations are required.
Wetlands Wildlife Identification and Natural History Series:
A three day series, identifying wildlife, their habitats, and learning about the valley's past and the importance Gray Lodges, past and future. Spanned across several weeks, this series provides insight in to the habits and requirements of our migratory waterfowl and other species. Conducted in Sept/Oct, this opportunity is open to the public, with reservations. Call for details.
The Nature Bowl:
This event is a one day team competition for all 3rd 6th grade students. Questions and activities focus on local and regional environmental science and issues. The event correlates with science standards. A coachs workshop is available by appointment in Dec/Jan, with the event to follow in the spring. Wild About Wetlands Kits:
Teach your students about wetlands and wildlife. All materials needed to carry out a lesson are included. Kits are available for loan at no charge. Activities are cross-curricular, including English, social science, mathematics and biology. Kit education targets the 4th 6th grades but is easily adapted to older and younger students. An orientation workshop is required. Call for more information.
Marsh Madness Youth Day:
CWA partners with refuges and wildlife areas to hold Marsh Madness Youth Days for under-served elementary schools. Each event brings 20-60 students to a public area near their community, to spend the day learning about wetlands, wildlife, and conservation. Transportation scholarships are available. The Gray Lodge event is held in the spring. Event requests begin in Dec. Call for more details.
