Port of Long Beach
The port is developing a former oil field (Pier S Terminal Development) and will need to realign the existing dike, construct a wharf, add some fill, and dredge. A consultant is preparing the draft Sampling and Analysis Plan, which should be available in early July. Port staff is not sure if the sediments will be clean, but they hope to take the material to the ocean disposal site (LA-2). Historically, sediments in that area have been suitable for disposal to the ocean site.
City of Long Beach
Jeff Edwards and Dennis Eschen (City of Long Beach), Fernando Pages and Sarah McFadden (Tetra Tech) presented information on the citys plans to apply to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to renew their 5-year maintenance dredging permit. They periodically need to dredge the East Beach area (entrance channel to Alamitos Bay) and West Beach area (LA River mouth, Catalina Cruise Terminal entrance Queensway Bay), although no dredging has occurred in the West Beach area over the past five years. Dredging is performed, usually with a hydraulic suction dredge, between September 1st and March 15th to eliminate endangered species concerns and avoid the grunion season. The City plans to collect grab samples from discrete areas whenever they need to be dredged. Based on historic sediment data, the dredged material will most likely be clean and suitable for beach nourishment. However, if contaminated material were to be encountered, such projects would be brought to the group for evaluation.
