Mission:
The Wishtoyo Foundation protects and preserves the culture and history of coastal communities and fosters responsibility to our waters, marine habitats and watersheds through research, education, community action and where necessary, citizen enforcement. We aim to utilize traditional Chumash beliefs, practices, songs, stories and dances to create self-respect and a greater awareness of our connection with, and dependence upon, the natural Environment.

Speaker/Lecture Series:
Mati Waiya makes presentations at various events and schools about Chumash history, ways, and cultural preservation and its relevance to today’s sustainablility and environmental issues. Peuyoko Perez conducts community outreach activities related to pesticides pollution and water quality. Paul Westefer leads volunteer trainings for water quality monitoring.

Education Programs:
Our Nicholas Canyon Chumash Demonstration Village project and Stream Restoration on the Malibu coast is available for school and public tours, upon request. Field trips have been initiated; please contact us to arrange visits.

Volunteer Opportunities

  Description:
1) Adults participate in Water Monitoring tasks for the Calleguas Creek watershed monitoring program. Contact Paul: paul@wishtoyo.org
2) Volunteers participate in the ongoing maintenance tasks of the creek restoration at Nicholas Canyon Creek including removal of non-native plants.

Internship Opportunities
Cultural resource protection issues. We work with UCLA Tribal Law interns.
