Mission:
The Natural Resources Conservation Service is the primary federal agency that works with private landowners to help them protect their natural resources. NRCS works in close cooperation with Resource Conservation Districts through field offices that serve nearly every county in the USA. NRCS emphasizes voluntary, science-based conservation technical assistance; partnerships; incentive-based programs; and cooperative problem-solving at the community level.

In cooperation and under the leadership of the local RCD, educational programs are offered to local elementary and secondary schools. Programs include: Americorps, Adopt-A-Watershed, FARMS and STRAW (Students and Teachers Restoring a Watershed). Program emphasis is riparian restoration and conservation of natural resources education.

Volunteer Opportunities

  Program:
Earth Team Program - National Voluntary Conservation Program
  Description:
Opportunities are diverse depending on volunteer qualifications, but duties pertain to conservation of natural resources. Activities include: assistance with stream restoration activites such as monitoring and planting; creation of educational fact sheets; creation of public information program materials; outreach and education; and general field office assistance.

  Qualifications:
Some background in natural resource conservation, ecology, botany, watershed restoration is desirable. Person must appreciate the contribution of agriculture to society, including livestock agriculture.

Internship Opportunities

  Description:
Assist field office conservationist with conservation planning activities on agricultural lands. Duties may include assisting with riparian restoration program, watershed water quality management, manure nutrient management. Duties also may include development of a public information program and/or educational materials.

College graduate or attending college desirable; others will be considered based on suitable skills and interest.
