Speaker/Lecture Series:
In the Sierra, the Alliance offers “Why Watershed” presentations to communities exploring the benefits of forming a collaborative, multi-stakeholder watershed group for their area. The presentations review what a watershed is, how collaborative groups are formed and work, and the assessments, protection, and restoration efforts watershed groups perform.

Education Programs:
“Watershed Council Toolkit: A guidebook for establishing collaborative watershed councils”
This toolkit includes information on watershed councils, how to get started forming a collaborative group, and tips for the success of maintaining a council. The kit is designed to provide tools for organizing stakeholders and establishing action plans to carry out effective assessments, restoration and protection projects.

The Alliance offers trainings in the Sierra to watershed groups in facilitation, planning, fundraising, collaboration, citizen monitoring, and best management practices. Training agendas are designed with a watershed group to meet the group's needs.

Volunteer Opportunities

  Program:
Sierra Creek Restoration Volunteer
  Description:
Volunteer for a creek restoration day planting native vegetation, picking up trash, taking water samples, and installing erosion matting on stream banks.
  When Needed:
Creek restoration days are scheduled twice a year during the late spring through early fall.
  Qualifications:
No experience necessary
  Commitment Required:
4 hours per event

Program:
Sierra Creek Restoration Organizer

  Description:
Assist a Creek Restoration Day coordinator call other volunteers, recruit native plants and materials for the restoration day, sign people in, and organize other volunteers at the site.
  When Needed:
Creek restoration days are scheduled twice a year during the late spring through early fall.
  Qualifications:
No experience necessary. Must be confident approaching other volunteers and businesses, and comfortable leading other volunteers.
  Commitment Required:
40 hours over 3 months

Internship Opportunities

  Program:
Sierra Watershed Internship
  Description:
Work with Alliance staff to coordinate events, research issues, organize trainings, write newsletter articles, and more. (10 to 40 hours per week)
  When Needed:
We accept interns all year.
  Qualifications:
Ability to work independently and with moderate supervision, basic understanding of watersheds and collaborative watershed groups, confidence calling and meeting with a variety of community members, strong writing skills
  Application:
Email a one page letter describing your interest in the internship, qualifications, and what you would hope to learn during the course of the internship. Include in the emailed letter your name, phone number, address and email address. Alliance staff will call to schedule a phone or in office interview. Academic credit and faculty sponsorship must be arranged by the applicant, but the internship will be designed to provide a strong education in Sierra watershed issues, build skills in collaborative organizing and research, and increase understanding of watershed policy in California.

The Alliance for the last three years has partnered with the Sustainable Communities Leadership Program (SCLP) to offer one summer fellowship a year. A stipend was provided in collaboration with SCLP. However a separate application procedure is required by SCLP. Contact Joan if you want referrals to the SCLP program.
