Education Programs:
Sailing Into Science (SiS) is a hands-on science and recreation program for Oakland elementary grades. During the regular school year, Oakland teachers schedule three full days to spend at the SiS classrooms using Lake Merritt as their laboratory. Students and teachers experience rich entry points into the worlds of Life Science, Physics, Earth Science, Environmental Science, and Nautical Science. Program instructors guide classes through adventurous education employing a comprehensive science curriculum developed in accordance with the California Elementary Science Standards. SiS immerses youth in a rigorous science program coupled with recreational activities proven to build confidence, self-esteem, foster creative problem solving, team building, and conflict resolution.

Volunteer/Internship Opportunities

  Program:
Sailing Into Science Assistant Educator
  Description:
Adult Volunteer would assist in delivering the Sailing Into Science curriculum including both the science and the boating components
  When Needed:
February-June, September-November
  Qualifications:
Experiential environmental and boating educational background is preferred
  Commitment Required:
6-30 hours/week, Monday through Friday
  Application/Training:
Applications accepted year-round. Training is primarily on-the-job during sessions.

Service Fee:
Field trips cost $300 per class per day. Partial scholarships are available for Oakland Title I schools.

The N bus line stops nearby and classes can be picked up at 19th and Madison Street by pontoon boat. Also nearby are other bus lines and the 19th Street BART.
