Education Programs:

  • Monthly nature walks: Guided walks on trails and preserves on or near Palos Verdes Peninsula with expert commentary on flora and fauna, geology, and history.
  • Grammar school program: Third grade students in PVP, San Pedro, and Lomita participate in a PVPLC naturalist series of four lessons on local plants, insects, birds, reptiles, and mammals, indigenous to native habitats, followed by a guided walk with parent volunteers to local open space.
  • Habitat restoration and plant propagation: Volunteers and staff remove foreign plants and replant with native species, PVPLC conducts a nursery for indigenous plants, volunteers assist.

In-Service Training:
Teachers, Docents/Volunteers, Students/Interns:
Public School teachers are trained to work with PVPLC naturalists in school program. Volunteers are trained to be walk leaders and students and adults are welcome in assisting on-going efforts to restore habitat.

Volunteer Opportunities

  Description:
Volunteers assist in nature walks when trained, in plant propagation and habitat restoration under expert guidance as well as in 3rd grade walk program.
Volunteers are also utilized from time to time in office work, assisting with mailings and special projects.
Expert assistance in graphic design, photography, writing, and art as well as all aspects of fundraising is welcome.

  Qualifications:
Strong interest in preserving open space, natural habitat, knowledge of flora, fauna, geology, conservation, and related most welcome but will train.
