The Cold Creek Docents of Mountains Restoration Trust meet for six Mondays in September and October for training in teaching “Chaparral plant ecology and animal communities” and “Early Chumash and Tongva Cultures,” topics of their environmental education programs for students in K-12 held at the UCLA Stunt Ranch Reserve and the Mountains Restoration Trust Cold Creek Preserve. The curricula comply with the state education code.

Volunteer Opportunities

A. Native Plant Restoration Days
B. Youth Naturalist Program and Discovery Nature Camp
C. Office work of Mountains Restoration Trust at Headwaters Corner in Calabasas
  Description:
A. Volunteers are asked to plant, water and weed the areas selected for native plant restoration in the areas five areas Mountains Restoration Trust owns/manages in the Santa Monica Mountains.
B. Volunteers are asked to assist with the Youth Naturalist Program and the summer Discovery Nature Camp for children 8-12 years old.
C. Volunteers will do light office work, update computer files, prepare bulk mailings, assist on MRT programs.
  When Needed:
Volunteers are needed throughout the year for all programs.
  Qualifications:
A. Restoration volunteers: willingness; no special training required.
B. YNP: Knowledgeable in natural history; enjoy working with children.
C. Office: computer literate
  Commitment Required:
No commitment is required although the programs and projects are usually scheduled for a 3-hour period.

  Program:
Public relations/outreach
  Description:
Prepare and submit articles, pictures, announcements of events, milestones, etc., to local newspapers, homeowner association newsletters and to elected officials. Manage MRT’s press records.

Program:
Vegetation technician

  Description:
The intern(s) would compile data; monitor restoration projects; prepare reports; and lead field crews in invasive plant eradication. The intern(s) may also coordinate a volunteer program for native plant restoration and invasive plant eradication.

Interns are needed year round
  Qualifications:
A botanical background for ability to identify plant species of Santa Monica Mountains. Willingness to work outdoors.
