  • Spaces & Species: Exploring Natural Communities (an environmental science education program for grades 3-6).
  • Other interpretive materials include "Taking Children on an Earthquake Walk," which is a guide to leading children along the San Andreas Fault Trail at Los Trancos Open Space Preserve.
  • The District also provides a wide variety of materials, including a quarterly newsletter, "Open Space Views," and trail brochures for District open space preserves.

  • The District offers training for its docent and volunteer programs.
  • The District provides several internship opportunities in several departments, including Public Affairs, Planning, and Operations (Resource Management), for college students.
  • The District provides over 300 docent-led hikes a year for the public covering a variety of topics and preserves. The District also occasionally holds special events on District preserves, such as historic house and garden tours, a Halloween Program entitled "Creatures of the Night," and outdoor environmental festivals celebrating open space preservation.

Volunteer Opportunities

  Program:
Preserve Partner
  Description:
Actively participate in the protection and restoration of open space lands and assist in providing opportunities for low-impact public enjoyment.
Assist District staff in trail maintenance and construction, tree planting, clean-up projects, exotic plant removal, fence removal, and other resource management related projects.
  When Needed:
Throughout the year. Projects are usually scheduled from 9:30a.m. to 3:30p.m. on the third Saturday of the month.
  Qualifications:
Volunteers must be in good health. They should wear appropriate clothing for outdoor work (sturdy shoes, layered clothing, work gloves). Volunteers under 14 must be accompanied by a parent or other adult.
  Commitment Required:
To assist us in planning the projects, we ask that Preserve Partners sign up at least one week in advance of the event. You may participate on a one-time basis or attend projects regularly.

Program:
Crew Leader

  Description:
Volunteer Crew Leaders actively participate in the protection and restoration of open space lands. Crew leaders help provide opportunities for ecologically sensitive public enjoyment of the preserves by assisting District staff members in leading volunteer projects, such as trail construction and routine maintenance, on District lands.
  When Needed:
Throughout the year
  Qualifications:
Volunteers must be at least 18 years old, in good health, and possess the physical strength and agility to perform manual labor requiring bending, stooping, kneeling, and lifting. They shall wear a designated uniform while assisting on projects.
  Commitment Required:
Two year commitment required. Must assist with at least four volunteer projects per year.
  Application/Training:
Members are required to complete an extensive training program, which includes two evening and five field training sessions. Call for details.

Program:
Special Project Volunteer

  Description:
Assist with long- or short-term projects on District preserves and/or in the main office. This may include making plant or wildlife inventories, conducting visitor surveys, updating maps, or helping with clerical tasks.
  When Needed:
Throughout the year
  Qualifications:
Particular qualifications will depend on the project selected. Many assignments require no special qualifications.
  Commitment Required:
Most projects allow for flexible schedules and can last from a few hours up to several months. Office projects must be scheduled during regular work hours (Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.).

Program:
Trail Patrol

  Description:
•  Actively participate in the protection of open space lands and assist in monitoring the ecologically sensitive preserve use opportunities provided by the District.
•  Distribute information, brochures, and maps to preserve visitors, educate visitors about proper trail use and safety, and provide staff with information on trail use patterns and trail conditions.
•  Serve as an equestrian, bicyclist, hiker, runner, or companion dog patroller.
  When Needed:
Throughout the year
  Qualifications:
Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and in good health. They shall wear a designated uniform while on patrol.
Equestrians must own or have regular access to a horse, and must successfully complete a qualification ride with a volunteer trainer. Bicyclists must provide their own bicycles, and are required to wear helmets. Companion dog patrol members must complete a dog certification program provided by the District.
  Commitment Required:
One year commitment required. Must patrol four hours per month and attend three of the four membership meetings each year.

Mandatory training consists of two evening and one field training session provided by staff. Call for details.

Program:
Docent

  Description:
Create and lead hikes and interpretive programs for the public on open space preserves.
Introduce preserve visitors to the natural history, ecology, and cultural history of the Bay Area, and encourage appreciation and stewardship of open space and wildland areas.
  When Needed:
Throughout the year
  Qualifications:
Docents must be at least 18 years old and in good health.
  Commitment Required:
One year commitment required. Must volunteer at least eight times per year.
  Application/Training:
Must complete a comprehensive 10-week training program conducted by staff and others with expertise in local natural and cultural history.

Program:
Outdoor Education Leader

  Description:
Take 3rd through 6th grade students on the environmental education field trip program, "Spaces and Species: Exploring Natural Communities." Provide children with an opportunity to focus on their own connections with the natural world.

Fall and spring

•  Desire to share appreciation of the natural world with others.
•  Enjoy working with people, especially children.
•  Agreement to wear docent T-shirt and name tag while leading field trips.

Two weekdays per month during spring and fall

Program:
Nature Center Host

  Description:
Staff the Daniels Nature Center, providing the public a chance to visit on a drop-in basis.
May also set up the aquatic lab with pond water samples, give "snake talks" with the District’s gopher snake, and offer presentations on natural and cultural history topics of their choice. They also assist with the general upkeep of the exhibits and the building.
  When Needed:
March through November, Saturdays and Sundays from 12pm to 5pm
  Qualifications:
•  Desire to share appreciation of the natural world with others.
•  Enjoy working with people.
•  Agreement to wear docent T-shirt and name tag during nature center shifts.
  Commitment Required:
Two weekend days, 12-5pm, every month

Internship Opportunities

  Program:
Public Affairs
  Description:
Media monitoring and analysis, representation of the District at fairs and exhibitions, newsletter article writing, outreach or media database creation or maintenance; event planning assistance and associated project coordination, web page/article creation or editing, slide or photography projects, preparation of public information correspondence and packets, interpretive or historical research.
  When Needed:
Fall/Spring- up to 10 months
Summer (3 to 4 months)
  Qualifications:
The intern will be expected to be available 12-15 hours per week, except during academic exam and vacation periods, and will receive orientation, guidance, and evaluation from his/her District supervisor, in addition to any associated academic instruction. Generally, successful intern candidates will possess superior communications and interpersonal skills and will have demonstrated interest or knowledge in one or more of the following areas: environmental studies or associated scientific disciplines, journalism, marketing, or visual media studies.

Program:
Resource Management (Operations Department)

  Description:
Internships would have an office and a field component related to natural resource management. Duties vary according to current projects and could involve, but are not limited to, any of the following: removing invasive, non-native plants as a part of a habitat restoration project, developing monitoring plans for specific restoration sites, organizing information on resource management topics, writing instructions and descriptions for different resource management techniques, mapping management sites, and conducting background research on specific resource management topics.
  When Needed:
Throughout the year, usually for 3 to 8 months. Dependent on project(s) and hours worked.
  Qualifications:
Knowledge of ecological systems, resource management issues, and habitat restoration. College education in natural resource management is preferred, but not necessary. Self-initiating and ability to work independently a plus.

Program:
GIS Intern (Planning Department)

  Description:
ArcView GIS experience necessary to assist with production of a map atlas of the District’s 24 open space preserves. The intern will play a key role on the project team, with responsibility for the following tasks: updating and refining open space preserve/private property boundaries; working with rangers and other staff to accurately plot the location of trails, landmarks and recreational facilities; developing GIS attribute tables for these features; designing draft and final map layouts; and compiling the preserve maps into a high quality atlas for use by District staff. This position may include field work and other GIS-related tasks in support of the District’s Planning Department on an as-needed basis.
  When Needed:
On an as needed/project basis, for approximately 6 months
  Qualifications:
The intern will be expected to be available 30-40 hours per week. Successful candidates will have a background in geography, planning, environmental studies, landscape architecture, or another related field; experience with ArcView GIS software; and demonstrated expertise/enthusiasm in cartography and map production. This position requires great attention to detail, excellent communication skills, the ability to work well both in team settings and independently, and the willingness to occasionally work in rugged, remote settings. Knowledge of GPS technology, ability to interpret topographic maps, and familiarity with plotters a plus.

Several of the District’s preserves have full-access trails built to accommodate wheelchairs, strollers, or anyone desiring a less strenuous open space experience, including Picchetti Ranch, Pulgas Ridge, Purisima Creek Redwoods, Monte Bello, Rancho San Antonio, Ravenswood, Skyline Ridge, Stevens Creek Shoreline Nature Study Area, and Windy Hill Open Space Preserves.
