Speaker/Lecture Series:
Our Youth Leaders present informative lectures to the public and school groups on a variety of topics including food security, wetlands and environmental justice.

Education Programs:

  • Environmental Justice Education
    Mobilizes youth in local environmental health and redevelopment initiatives through action projects. Focus areas: air quality, health & justice, food security, toxic site clean-up, & more!

  • Herons Head Wetland Park
    Engages student volunteers in park stewardship activities including: environmental monitoring, natural history, plant and wildlife conservation, and park maintenance.

  • The Living Classroom
    Introduces youth to alternative energy and sustainable design technologies through hands-on involvement in the design and construction of "The Living Classroom," a greehouse and classroom to be built at Herons Head Park. (Limited availability.)

  • Youth Envision
    Employs and trains six to ten high school aged youth per year in community assessment and advocacy skills around Bayview's food security and environmental justice issues in partnership with the Department of Public Health and the San Francisco League of Urban Gardeners.

  • Youth IMPACT
    Employs and trains 10-15 high school aged youth as researchers and evaluators of best practices amongst SF's Department of Children, Youth, and Families grantees in partnership with sfLEARNS.

  • Slough Youth
    Employs and trains 15 youth in wetlands monitoring in Bayview's Yosemite Watershed in partnership with the Audobon Society.

Volunteer Opportunities

  Program:
Heron’s Head Park & Bay Youth for The Environment
  Description:
At Heron’s Head Park volunteers teach park stewardship, with the work varying depending on the season. At the Nursery volunteers will be doing Nursery upkeep, such as plant transplanting. Activities also vary depending on what needs to be done.
  When Needed:
BYE holds volunteer days the 1st Saturday of the month. HHP holds volunteer days the 2nd Saturday of every month.
  Qualifications:
Must be physically able to handle labor intensive work and getting dirty.
  Commitment Required:
The volunteer days typically run for about four hours.

Internship Opportunities
Please review our Program pages and see what area of our work most closely aligns with your academic program and interests.
Send an email to the Staff person responsible for that program. Let us know why you are interested in working with LEJ, describe your background in that program area (food security, environmental education, etc.), and the dates you will be available to intern. Include a resume.
We also sponsor interns who are interested in non-profit management, including the areas of financial administration and development/communications. To inquire about those opportunities, please email our Operations Manager with your information.

Slideshows:
We offer slide shows on wetland ecology, environmental justice, sustainability and bird and plant identification. These are in-class or on-site presentations by LEJ staff.

There are parking lots/ spaces at all of our program locations.

Public Transit Access:
Heron’s Head Park can be accessed by SF MUNI lines 19 & 44. Both stop at Evans Avenue and Jennings Street.

Disabled Access:
Disabled Access is available at Heron's Head Park on Cargo Way in San Francisco. This is the site of many of our programs.
