Education Programs:
Interpretative-Docent education program. Docents learn about marine mammals with an emphasis on pinnipedia, as well as the natural history of the area. When trained, they provide valuable onsite education for visitors to the harbor seal colony. Materials offered consist of educational postcard handouts, and a web site. Postcards promote an educational website, www.lajollafriendsoftheseals.org.

Set up is on a sidewalk above the beach, so crowding can be a problem. Small groups preferable (under 6 at a time).

Volunteer Opportunities

  Program:
Naturalist-Docent volunteer
  Description:
Onsite marine mammal education for the public. Question and Answer format
  When Needed:
Throughout the year
  Qualifications:
Knowledgeable and enthusiastic about marine mammals, local history and political controversy. Ability to interact with the general public
  Commitment Required:
6 hours per month of 2 shifts each
  Application/Training:
Two and a half hour review of teaching materials and one "shadow" session with an experienced docent.
