Education Programs:

  • Tidepool Interpretive Program at Treasure Island - On-site resource education on the flora and fauna of the rocky intertidal habitat in the State Marine Conservation Area at the Treasure Island Seashore. Brochures on tidepool flora and fauna are provided.
  • Tidepool Interpretive Program at Heisler Park - On-site resource education on the flora and fauna of the rocky intertidal habitat in the State Marine Reserve at Heisler Park. Brochures on flora and fauna are provided.
  • Volunteer TideWater Docent Program - On-site resource education on the flora and fauna of the rocky intertidal habitats at Heisler Park, Shaws Cove, Woods Cove, and Treasure Island. Brochures on flora and fauna are provided.
  • Summer Internship Program - College level program where interns participate in educating the public of the tidepool resources at Heisler Park or Treasure Island , research the human use trends at various Laguna Beach intertidal areas, and survey shorebird populations along the Laguna shoreline.
  • Human Impacts of the Rocky Intertidal Zone - High School research program testing human impacts on different intertidal area within Laguna Beach.
  • Structure and Function in the Tidepools - 4th grade tidepool program where students research intertidal animals, their habitats, predators, and food supply.

We train a variety of people (teachers, naturalists, students) with diverse backgrounds how to be tidepool educators or docents. Our tidepool educators and docents offer educational services to the general public on the intertidal resources at multiple locations.

Volunteer Opportunities

  Program:
TideWater Docent Program
  Description:
Educating the public on the resources of the rocky intertidal areas within Laguna Beach.
  When Needed:
Year-round
  Qualifications:
Interest in marine biology, a willingness to learn, good people skills.
  Commitment Required:
3 hours per month. Shifts are scheduled any day of the week throughout the year.

Sign-up for a formal training on-line or by phone. Attend formal training. Sign-up and attend field training.

Internship Opportunities

Summer Internship Program
  Description:
-Educate the public on the intertidal habitat at Treasure Island and Heisler Park
-Conduct intertidal human use surveys
-Participate in local shorebird surveys
-Collect data on marine debris, water quality, tidepool health, and Marine Protected Area violations
-Data compilation and report writing
