Mission:
The refuge has two main purposes: to protect and enhance wetlands and bay habitats for migratory birds and to protect endangered species and their habitats. The mission of the National Wildlife Refuge system is to provide the general public with a quality wildlife-oriented recreational experience and an opportunity to utilize a renewable natural resource.

Education Programs:
Refuge staff provides environmental education programs and guided walks for school and community groups by reservation as well as a quarterly series of ecology talks termed “Friday Nights at the Refuge.” The Friends of Humboldt Bay NWR offer guided walks the first and third Wednesdays of every month and the Audubon Society offers guided walks the third Sunday of the month at the Salmon Creek Unit. Our partner group, Friends of the Dunes, offers guided tours at dunes units of the refuge as well as other outreach/educational programs.
