Mission:
To protect endangered species and surrounding ecosystems, particularly relating to bird conservation. We sponsor field trips in the Bay Area for bird watching and organize classes in the natural sciences and field ornithology to educate the public about conservation. Monthly membership meetings feature lectures, films, and slide presentations. We have a lending library of books on birding and a filing system on bird watching and various conservation issues. We publish a monthly bulletin and serve as a general information and referral center for various environmental topics.

Please see volunteer opportunities below. We have many field trip opportunities for 4th and 5th graders and adult birders, and our library has detailed encyclopedias and specialized scientific bird literature.
Guides, bird feeders, bird books, puzzles, learning tools are all available for purchase, and our books are free to check out.

  Description:
Political Activist: Send one or more letters a month to local and national policymakers to make sure our voice is heard on critical environmental issues.
Environmental Educator: Education programs in East Oakland schools work with students and families in conservation education and restoration of some of the Bay’s most unique wildlife habitats. Volunteers work directly with school groups, teaching environmental education programs to 4th and 5th grade students and their families as well as helping to lead field trips.
Wildlife Restoration: Restore wildlife habitats in Alameda Wildlife Refuge, Oakland’s Clinton Basin, Heron’s Head Park, Pier 94 in San Francisco, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Regional Shoreline Park in Oakland.
Wildlife Monitor: Help to conduct surveys of salt marsh habitat and view endangered species in 2-hour sessions.
Field Trip Leader: Local, regional, and international trips for birders of all levels, guided by birding experts, as well as feeder watchers and count circle teams.
Conservation Committees: Join one of four committees that focuses on conservation in San Francisco, the East Bay, the future Alameda Wildlife Refuge, and Latin America. Volunteers monitor government agencies, protect wildlife habitat, and organize habitat restoration projects and refuge work parties.
Community Outreach: Work to recruit volunteers and activists and encourage the Bay Area to protect wildlife by sending out monthly new member letters and tabling at events.
Speakers/Bird Experts: Address school groups, seniors, and other community groups and serve as a reference.
Photographers/Writers: Publish photos and articles in our newsletter.
Organizational/Administrative: Help with mailings, data entry, program support, letter writing, research.
Other Committees/Board: Affect many decisions made within the organization.

  Commitment Required:
Environmental Education is 8 hours a month.
Wildlife Restoration in Alameda is once a month (2nd Sunday) September through March, all year long for San Francisco.
Wildlife Monitoring is monthly for 2 hour sessions.
Conservation Committees meet once a month (East Bay-2nd Monday, SF-1st Monday, Alameda–2nd Sunday September through March).
Community Outreach is mainly weekends.
