Weekly walks, including once per month wastewater treatment plant tour;
Occasional special lectures by local experts

Volunteer Opportunities

  Program:

  Description:
1)Lead 90-minute tour of Arcata Marsh & Wildlife Sanctuary; 2)Staff front desk in interpretive center (4-hour shift on weekends); 3)Staff table at community events; 4)Serve on board of directors (3-year term)
  When Needed:
Throughout the year
  Qualifications:
Must be 18 years old. Complete docent training or orientation by city staff or have background knowledge in tour subject matter
  Commitment Required:
No minimum, except for board members, who are expected to attend a majority of monthly meetings plus four hours per month
  Application/Training:
Contact staff naturalist at Interpretive Center or volunteer coodinator for FOAM


Internship Opportunities

  Program:
City of Arcata Environmental Services Intern
  Description:
40 hours of staffing at the Interpretive Center; 40 hours Interpretive Project (usually exhibits, but there are other possibilities); keep a journal
  When Needed:
All year
  Qualifications:
Interest in wastewater, wetlands, plants, birds, public service, leading tours, and exhibit creation. Coordination between student, advisor, and Interpretive Naturalist.

Fill out application and interview with Interpretive Naturalist
  Number of Interns:
1 to 5 annually
