Education Programs:
On-going programs include:

  • Coastal Ecosystem Program: We offer a Coastal Ecosystem Curriculum to teachers for high school students and provide a one-week training for teachers. We also facilitate local sandy beach and rocky intertidal monitoring programs for high school students.
  • Visitor Center Programs: We offer programs for all ages, which focus on the National Marine Sanctuaries and marine life.
  • Fact Sheets and Slide Shows: We have educational materials about the Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary.
  • Newsletter: Members of the Association receive the semiannual newsletter, Hydrosphere as well as Upwelling, our monthly eNewsletter.
  • Marine Education Resource Library: Curriculum guides, over 300 different children's books, dozens of reference books, and over 200 different videos. Members can borrow materials for up to three weeks.

Volunteer Opportunities

  Program:
Beach Watch and SEALS
  Description:
Beach Watch is a long-term beach monitoring project. Every four weeks, volunteers survey "their" beach for live and dead birds and marine mammals.
SEALS volunteers monitor harbor seals and human activity in Bolinas Lagoon and Tomales Bay. The goal of the program is to minimize disturbance to the seal colonies and educate the community about habitat protection.
  When Needed:
All year
  Qualifications:
Must be 18 years of age, attend all trainings and be responsible for regular monitoring sessions of three hours.
  Commitment Required:
Variable times, one year commitment

SEALS training - begins each January

Program:
Visitor Center Interpretive Specialist

  Description:
The Farallones Marine Sanctuary Association is seeking volunteers to assist with staffing our visitor center in the Presidio of San Francisco. We are looking for dedicated people who are interested in learning about the marine environment and the National Marine Sanctuary Program and finding creative ways to disseminate this information to the public.
Responsibilities include:
•  Staffing the visitor center and helping maintain the exhibits, which include a cold saltwater aquarium, microscope, and computer exhibit
•  Assistance in providing environmental education for school groups
•  Distributing Sanctuary materials
  When Needed:
The visitor center is open Wednesday through Sunday from 10am to 4pm.
  Qualifications:
•  A friendly and out-going individual interested in working with the public
•  A background in marine biology helpful but not required
•  Awareness and interest in marine issues and marine conservation
•  The ability to work with little supervision
  Commitment Required:
Time commitment would be from at least 12 hours a month to more.

Service Fee:
Membership is $35 for students and teachers, $45 for individuals.
Some materials require a shipping and handling fee.
Refundable deposits are required for materials lending.

The visitor center is located on the west end of Crissy Field in the Presidio of San Francisco. It is open 10a.m. to 4p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.
