Education Programs:
Our organization provides hands-on learning programs to K-8th graders presented by trained docents. This is then followed (in most cases) by a field trip that corresponds to the information. We also train docents and teachers in eight natural science topics, which include baylands, marine, water science and conservation.

We offer a teaching certificate in environmental education through UCSC (Santa Cruz) Extension. We also train docents, have interns, and train them and all volunteers before they are pressed into services.

Volunteer Opportunities

  Program:
Volunteer Docent
  Description:
Environmental Volunteers train people who have an interest in children and science/nature to go into local K-8 grade classrooms, and to local field trip sites to teach 8 different environmental subjects (Bay Ecology, Foothill Ecology, Nature in Your Neighborhood, etc.) We provide interested volunteers with training that is fun and informative. Volunteer hours are flexible.
  When Needed:
School year and some Summer camp
  Qualifications:
An interest in nature and children. No previous teaching experience or natural science experience needed.
  Commitment Required:
7 hours per month for 1 school year, although flexible
  Application/Training:
Multi-subject training covers all eight of our programs and is held September through December, Wednesday, mornings, 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. We also offer montholy single subject/ training classes on weekday evenings and Saturdays from October through April.

Internship Opportunities

  Program:
Nature Docent Interns
  Description:
Nature Docent Interns will complete one of our regular or a possible customized training program, lead field trips, and make classroom presentations.
This is an excellent opportunity to learn about the local environment and gain valuable teaching and leadership skills, and be part of a successful grassroots organization. Our training classes are accredited through San Jose State University.
  When Needed:
Throughout the school year
  Qualifications:
Candidates should be undergraduates, graduate, or recently graduated students interested in the environment and education. Successful candidates will have good rapport with children and volunteers and the ability to work independently with appropriate supervision.
