Volunteer Opportunities

  Program:
Aquarist Volunteer
  Description:
Responsible for maintaining the exhibits, collecting specimens, and cleaning and feeding over 50 marine aquaria. Working under the direction of the Curator of the Aquaria, volunteers will prepare the animals' food, monitor the health of the animals, record tank temperatures and chemical status, and keep the exhibit and prep areas clean. Volunteers must be willing to get wet occasionally. Aquarists often have contact with curious visitors and should be able to deal with questions from the general public.

•  Able to keep clear and orderly work area
•  Able to be a self-starter and accept changes in procedure

  Program:
Docent and Interpretive Guides
  Description:
Docents work with the science resource teachers and program director to develop new methods of interpreting Sweetwater Marsh National Wildlife Refuge.
•  Develop and lead tours of interior and exterior exhibits and on interpretive trails
•  Interpret natural history for the public
•  Identify birds inhabiting the refuge
•  Describe the history of the site
•  Understand the goals of Nature Center
•  Take plant and animal materials into classrooms
•  Research and interpret historical events and marsh ecology
•  Identify areas of interest within the marsh
•  Develop narrative for walks around the Nature Center campus and on the Refuge interpretive trails that focus on birds, food webs, who lives here, insects, plants, human use etc.
•  Adapt presentations to different age groups including adults
•  Be very flexible

  Description:
The Nature Center Gift Shop sells naturalist supplies. Volunteers needed to operate admission and cash registers. Must be informed about inventory.
