K-12 Curricula:
•  Oceans to Classrooms Floating Lab Curriculum - A middle school curriculum focusing on marine science. This curriculum is a collaborative effort with UC Santa Barbara. Under Development will be available in 2001 or 2002
•  Coastal Watersheds Curriculum - a 4th-12 th grade curriculum guide and field study directory. This is a joint project with Project Clean Water and other organizations. Under Development - will be available in 2001.
•  Mapping An Ocean Sanctuary Curriculum - a 7-12th grade curriculum using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) skills and concepts. The curriculum includes 5 modules. This project is a collaborative effort with the Center for Image Processing in Education (CIPE), National Geographic Society's Sustainable Seas Expeditions and National Science Foundation.
•  34 Degree North Curriculum - a middle school curriculum focusing on marine science concepts.

Technology:
•  CINMS Web site - CINMS maintains an active web site with information about , research, educations, marine reserves, management plan, natural and cultural resources and much more.
•  CINMS Weather Kiosk - provides real time weather data 24 hours a day for mariners, fishers, divers and other sanctuary user groups through an interactive touch screen kiosk at the Santa Barbara Harbor Fuel Pier. Also available via the CINMS web site.

Volunteer Opportunities

  Program:
Sanctuary Naturalist Corps
  Description:
Sanctuary Naturalist Corps volunteers represent CINMS and educate passengers on board local whale watch vessels, marine floating labs, and natural history tours about the culturally rich and biologically diverse resources found within the sanctuary, monitor sanctuary resources, and assist with marine mammal research. In addition, Sanctuary Naturalist Corps volunteers provide sanctuary presentations for schools and community groups and attend public outreach events.
  When Needed:
Field season January-October, training class November-January
  Qualifications:
Be able to handle 4 to 8 hours at sea on power and sailing vessels, enjoy working with the public and have good communication skills, be at least 18 years of age, and attend all required training.
  Commitment Required:
The volunteer commitment is for a period of one year, for a minimum of 8 hours per month.
  Application/Training:
Must be able to attend a five-week training course November-January. Sessions are held on weekday evenings and some Saturdays. Additional bi-monthly lectures and field trips, conducted throughout the field season January-October. Internship Opportunities

  Description:
CINMS offers internships in research, education, and resource protection departments. Interns work closely with staff on the development of educational curricula and brochures, participation at community outreach events, public advisory meetings, Geographic Informations Systems (GIS) and database management, research permits and field work, and policy review.
Duration: 4-6 months
  When Needed:
Interns are recruited in the Fall, Spring, and Summer.
  Qualifications:
Undergraduate and graduate students preferably in an area of study related to marine science and resource management, able to commit 8-16 hours per week for a period of 4-6 months
