Speaker and/or Lecture Series:
Science in the Classroom - all grade levels and several topics that teachers may select, such as geology, bio-diesel, stream restoration, stream assessment, water quality monitoring, organic agriculture, etc.

Education Programs:
• Spring-time after school program focusing on natural world topics and activities held at the River Center for grade school ages.
• A one-week summer camp complementing and expanding on the topics offered during the after school program, also held at the River Center.
• Student intern summer program (one or two high school students) who learn about and assist in implementing River Center operations and programs.
• Special event booth & activities presented at several events each year.

In-Service Training:

Teacher Workshops held twice per year with varying topics relating to natural resources. The River Center partners with several other agencies to bring a variety of speakers to the workshops.
Volunteers receive training on technical aspects of River Center operations and programs.

Volunteer Opportunities

  Program:
Pit River Clean-up / River Center operations & programs
  Description:
Collecting trash from the Pit River riparian area in Alturas on an annual basis. The River Center welcomes volunteers to assist in River Center operations and many programs. Tasks vary from cleaning the facility to chaperoning children on field trips.
  When Needed:
All year round, but spring is extra busy so volunteer help is especially appreciated during April – June.
  Qualifications:
Ability to follow directions, ability to work around and with people of all ages. Knowledge of fish aquariums, native plants, and other natural resource topics helpful.

  Application/Training:
Submit a resume and purpose for volunteering at the River Center or complete a sign-in form for episodic events. Training as needed is received from the Executive Director or other River Center employees.

Internship Opportunities

  Program:
Program & operations assistant
  Description:
Cleaning and upkeep of facility, displays, aquariums, outdoor plantings, and storage areas. Responding to public inquiries via phone, email and in person. Record keeping. Developing PowerPoint slide presentations for special events, i.e., natural resources of Modoc County presentation used at the Modoc District Fair. Assisting with after school and summer camp programs and other field trips.
  When Needed:
Spring and summer
  Qualifications:
Ability to perform manual labor in all weather conditions, knowledge of basic computer use, ability to communicate with the public, skill in working with people of all ages.

Selected through a competitive process held during April/May. Contact the River Center directly.

For Summer Camp, there is a nominal charge to cover materials w/ scholarships available.

Parking Availability:
A paved parking area of a dozen spaces is located adjacent to the River Center facility. Bus access is feasible in the parking lot next to the River Center.

A ramp leads to the River Center entry. Many displays at various levels offer opportunity for interactive learning at all abilities. Restroom is accessible.
