Volunteer Opportunities

  Program:
Point Mugu and Leo Carrillo State Park Docent
  Description:
Docents do all or some of the following activities: staff the nature center, provide tidepool watch, help out in planning and staffing special events, give school and public interpretive programs.

An interest and willingness to work outdoors and with people

A minimum 5 hours per month

Internship Opportunities

  Program:
1st Interpretive Intern
  Description:
Under the direction of the West Malibu Sector Supervising Ranger, the Interpretive Intern position is responsible for presenting and creating interpretive programs and exhibits. This position will work directly with the State Park Interpreter of the West Malibu Sector.
1. Participate on the Ventura County Fair Planning Committee and implement the artistic design for the Ventura County fair exhibit. Staff the booth. (15%)
2. Staff the Sycamore Nature Center, providing the public with information on the historic use and occupation of the house, and on the other natural and cultural resources of Point Mugu State Park. (25%)
3. Participate on a planning and design committee to implement the interpretive plan for the sector. Projects may include assisting in creating and distributing publications about the history of the Sycamore Nature Center and the park, designing and creating new displays, removing or revamping old displays, and interpretive program development. (25%)
4. Provide outreach programs to multi-cultural groups, creating proper outreach publications, and an audiovisual presentation. (15%)
5. Present programs including hikes and junior ranger programs to the public. (20%)
Work sites:
Sycamore Nature Center will be the primary site for working on planning, meetings, training and creating exhibits as well as giving presentations to visitors. Ample workspace, desks and supplies are available at this site.
Operations Sycamore Cove-West Malibu Sector Ranger Station will be a secondary work site mainly for computer projects and restocking supplies.
Training Procedure:
1. Orientation to the West Malibu Sector of the Angeles District, including introductions to park staff and a park tour of natural sites, facilities and resources.
2. Participation in Ranger and Docent Interpretive hikes and training.
3. Sycamore Nature Center training including sales and natural/cultural history of Point Mugu and Leo Carrillo State Parks.
4. Basic interpretive methods training.
  When Needed:
3 months in summer or 6 months spring, summer
  Qualifications:
1. Good oral and written communication skills.
2. Program planning and public relations experience desired.
3. Ability to be self-motivated, resourceful and to be a team player.
4. MSWord, MSPublisher and MSAccess computer software skills desired or comparable experience creating databases, reports and brochures.
5. Experience and desire to work with children in an outdoor setting.

Day-use parking lots with beach and inland access at Leo Carrillo State Park. Point Mugu State Park offers a parking lot at Sycamore Cove Beach and another across the street at Sycamore Canyon.
