Education Programs:
Offers pre-visit materials for coastal visitors and participants on our free docent-led tours. Lab/field workshops called Sea Search and Ocean Outreach programs. Offers educator workshops, whale watching, and trains naturalists to interpret the shore. Night time programs focus on grunion spawning when in season. Lab programs and spring tours focus on sandy beaches, mudflats, and tidepool habitats. Public afterschool and weekend workshops (Science at the Seashore) include tidepool walks, discovery labs, and field trips. Educational Materials include volunteer and member newsletters, tidepool field guide, pop-up book, and educational brochures and posters.

Educator workshops are offered quarterly. Docents trained, as are senior and junior high school summer volunteers to support aquarium tours. Sea Ranger naturalists and Whale naturalists offer on land and sea education. Aquatic nursery interns/volunteers conduct animal husbandry research.

Volunteer Opportunities

  Program:
CMA Volunteers
  Description:
Volunteers assist CMA's touring docents in the exhibit hall, on the beach, during the spring program outdoor classroom tours, as afternoon and weekend colunteers, aquaculture research lab docents and interns. Junior/ senior high docents, whale watch naturalists, sea ranger naturalists and in the native plant garden. Opportunities also avaliable in development, curatorial, education, speakers bureau, office and gift shop.

Year-round, mainly mornings
  Qualifications:
Any interest in learning and sharing knowledge
  Commitment Required:
Varies from walk-in to 1 day/week for 1-2 years
  Application/Training:
Long term programs may involve an application/interview, some training, membership in FRIENDS fingerprinting, and continuing education enrichments. Touring docents are intensively trained in a series of twelve weekly 3½ hour sessions. Informal volunteer opportunities are avaliable.

Internship Opportunities

  Description:
Getty funded internships may be avaliable for Exhibits Department, Aquaculture Research Lab, and Education Department. Projects include mentoring, animal husbandry research, exhibits and graphics work, collections and education. Esposure to the workings of a medium-sized aquarium is part of all internships.

Primarily Summer, some year-round opportunities

Requirements based on program and funder. May be multicultural, low income, student.

Service Fee:
General Visitors suggested donation fee $2 per adult/$1 per child. School tours and many programs free of charge, trips and workshops self-sustaining fee.
