Speaker/Lecture Series:
In-class activities based around California Science Standards. All activities are hands-on and interactive. There are also, multi-day thematic units available.

Education Programs:
SEA (Science, Education, and Awareness) Series brings the marine sciences into elementary and middle school classrooms. Each unit of the series is taught over several visits, and involves experiential learning opportunities, such as dissections, water quality testing, contact with live animals, microscope work, experiments, and field trips. At the end of each unit, the students are sent home with examples of how they can help protect the ocean environment they’ve just learned about, translating their awareness into action.

Volunteer Opportunities

  Program:
SEA Series Instructor
  Description:
Assist in leading hands-on science activities at low-income schools throughout San Diego county; prepare materials for classroom activities; reorganize and return supplies
  When Needed:
September - June
  Qualifications:
Must be 18 years old
Interview and copy of resume with 2 to 3 references
Enrollment in college and working toward a four-year degree in marine science and/or education or Graduate Student
Ability to communicate scientific concepts to youth
Enthusiasm for working with youth
Prompt and dependable
Interest in both science and education
Successfully pass state fingerprinting check (live-scan)
Dedicated to the concept of promoting equal opportunity for under-represented students
  Commitment Required:
1 day per week, 3-4 hours during that day

Overview of teaching techniques and protocols
Training on each classroom activity
Orientation to materials and set-up
Traveling to the field trip location and reviewing the procedure

Internship Opportunities

  Title:
BAHIA Instructor
  Description:
Research/Education Volunteer will aid in activities during the marine science preparation portion of the program in San Diego, attend BAHÍA team training in April and spend 5 weeks in Bahía de los Angles, Mexico aiding in research projects, field trips and other program support activities. Dependent on background volunteer will either assist in an existing research project or facilitate his or her own research project. The program will continue into August with San Diego activities and presentation preparation. Small stipend included and all costs of travel and living are covered by the organization.
