The American River Conservancy conducts conservation, education, and stewardship programs to protect and enhance native fisheries, vanishing plant and animal communities, scenic vistas, cultural heritage and recreational lands within the American and Cosumnes River watersheds, which lie in the foothills of the eastern Sacramento Valley.

Education Programs:
The Conservancy offers on-site education to school-age (grades 1-5) children in natural history and watershed science through programs ranging from one hour to one day. We also offer off-site natural science education to public and private schools for grades 1-5. We have at least one monthly nature hike, two evening lectures on natural history/natural science and a handful of workshops and other nature-related programs each month.

Volunteer Opportunities

  Program:
Conservancy volunteers fall under three categories: education, stewardship and general/administrative
  Description:
Education needs are for help with our outreach programs at the schools doing habitat planting and restoration. Stewardship opportunities include water quality monitoring, river and stream cleanups, habitat restoration and, soon, trail building and maintenance. General/administrative opportunities include being a docent in our nature center, helping with office tasks such as bulk mailings, data entry, graphic and web design and nature center maintenance.
  When Needed:
We have needs for general administrative volunteers year-round, water quality monitoring occurs for ¾ of the year and we have general stewardship opportunities at regular points throughout the year.
  Qualifications:
We match opportunities with experience and areas of interest.
  Commitment Required:
There is no minimum requirement. However, in order to attend our annual volunteer appreciation, a minimum of 20 hours of volunteer time is necessary.

Service Fee:
Varies from program to program. Fee is nominal and covers materials and any speaker stipend charged to the Conservancy.

Parking Availability:
Ample parking for Conservancy programs in the Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park. A small fee may apply in rare instances.
