King Range National Public Lands Day    - Humboldt County

Saturday, September 24.

Participate in King Range National Conservation Area's National Public Lands Day event and build a section of trail and stream crossings at Hidden Valley. The Hidden Valley Interpretive Trail that we will be constructing will eventually consist of about 2.5 miles of two stacked loops of easy to moderate hiking. Ma-le'l Dunes Restoration    - Humboldt County

Saturday, September 24, 9:30am-12:30pm.

Meet Friends of the Dunes at the Ma-le'l Dunes South (BLM) off of Young Lane in Manila. We will then carpool to the US Fish & Wildlife Service Ma-le'l North. We will be going past 2 locked gates, thus there is no leaving early from this site. Gloves, tools and cookies are provided. Please wear closed-toed shoes and bring drinking water. Environmental Education Teacher Workshops    - Humboldt County

Saturday, September 24, 9am-noon.

In this hands-on and informative morning workshop you will receive three new California State Park resources for classroom teachers and other environmental educators, a variety of other recently developed curriculum, AND a variety of specimens to use in your environmental education program. These recently published guides provide in one user-friendly resource: A review of basic ecology; Natural history of the habitat type (rocky coast, coast redwood forest, mixed conifer forest); Human history of the habitat from ancient to modern times; How to organize and conduct a field trip that is safe for kids and for the environment; Standards-based lessons and activities for before, during, and after a trip to the habitat; Up-to-date resources and references. From 1-3:30pm, a workshop on the Project Learning Tree High School Module on Forest Ecology will be held. The cost is $10 for one or both of the workshops. Cabrillo Day    - Mendocino County

Saturday, September 24, 10am-4pm.

Celebrate Point Cabrillo Lighthouse. The Lighthouse Lantern Room and Fresnel Lens Tours will be offered from 10.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. A modest fee which supports the lighthouse maintenance fund is appreciated. Children must be at least 42 inches tall to participate in the tours. Reservations are recommended, though not required, and may be made in advance by contacting the lighthouse at (707) 937-6122.

Black Butte Lake National Public Lands Day    - Glenn County

Participate in Black Butte Lake's National Public Lands Day event and collect litter around the recreation areas. Volunteers with boats can collect litter along the shoreline areas. 24th Annual Russian River Watershed Cleanup    - Sonoma County

Saturday, September 24 and Sunday, September 25, 9am-noon.

The Russian River Watershed Cleanup, now in its 24th year, will take place on the weekend of September 24th and 25th. The actual Cleanup will occur on Saturday, September 24th and the sorting of debris and haul-off will occur on Sunday, September 25th. Community members will clean up the river between Asti and Monte Rio by canoe and by foot on Saturday. The mission of the Russian River Watershed Cleanup Committee is to coordinate cleanup and removal of trash in the Russian River and its tributaries between Cloverdale and Jenner. Please wear old rugged clothing. Shoes should protect your feet especially if you plan to wade in the river to pull out trash. DO NOT wear sandals or flips-flops. Old sneakers work well for the people in canoes. If you plan to walk on shore, please make sure that your footwear is supportive and protective. If you can pick up garbage, you can participate. We require that anyone under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Sign up online to volunteer.

Lake Sonoma National Public Lands Day    - Sonoma County

Participate in Lake Sonoma's National Public Lands Day event to clean shoreline, maintain trails and plant trees. Registration is between 8:00 and 8:45 with breakfast snack and coffee to start the day. Lunch served after the work party at approximately 12:30pm. Paddle with a Porpoise    - Marin County

Saturday, September 24, 9:30am-4pm.

Paddle in Richardson Bay along the Sausalito shoreline from Schoonmaker Beach to Cavallo Point to view harbor porpoises, with Environmental Traveling Companions and naturalists Bill Keener and Armando Quintero. This kayak excursion will take you along the Bay Water Trail in Richardson Bay, with ETC's experienced guides and naturalists who've been studying the harbor porpoises that frequently feed in the currents around Cavallo Point. We'll stop at a beach for a picnic lunch and a rest along the way. No previous kayak experience necessary, though we may encounter some rough water near the Point. Cost is $85/person. Union City Civic Center Creek Care Walk    - Alameda County

Saturday, September 24, 10am-noon.

We will walk along the trial next to the creek that flows through Union City's Civic Center park area, observe wildlife habitat, learn how to care for and protect the creek, and pick up any trash that we find. We will also care for native plants that were planted last spring. Sign up at www.handsonconservation.org. Hands-On Conservation is a program of the Alameda County Resource Conservation District. Meet at Union City Civic Center. Enter the park from Royal Ann Drive and meet next to the skatepark. Under age 13 must attend with a parent, under 18 must have parent sign form. National Estuaries Day with Save The Bay    - Alameda County

Saturday, September 24, 9am-noon.

Did you know that San Francisco Bay is actually an estuary? Have you ever heard of brackish water? Do you know how many major estuaries can be found in the U.S.? Save The Bay's field educators are estuary experts and after spending "a day on the Bay," you will be too. Join Save The Bay as we remove invasive weeds at the Eden Landing Ecological Preserve. Volunteers will learn about the ecology of the San Francisco Estuary while participating in the largest tidal wetland restoration project on the West Coast. Get more information and register online.

Joaquin Miller Park Nursery Event    - Alameda County

Saturday, September 24 or October 8, 1:30-4:30pm.

Join Friends of Sausal Creek for an afternoon of native plant propagation and nursery maintenance. Activities include sowing, transplanting, and cuttings. Bring layers and water; we provide tools, gloves, instruction and snack. Drop-ins welcome. Minors need a guardian to sign a waiver. Please contact Megan at field@sausalcreek.org to RSVP. San Joaquin River National Public Lands Day    - Fresno County

Join RiverTree Volunteers for their National Public Lands Day event to clean-up the River by canoe and from the shore. We will have 24 canoes available on a first come basis for volunteers to use to help cleanup the San Joaquin River in the Fresno area. We will provide trash bags, leather gloves, bottled water and some snacks. Volunteers should wear foot protection (broken glass and sharp objects) in the water and appropriate sun protection. Fog Fest    - San Mateo County

Saturday, September 24 and Sunday, September 26, 10am-6pm.

The Pacific Coast Fog Fest is a celebration of sun, sand and surf that defines life on the coast and celebrates our marvelous coastal climate. The Pacific Coast Fog Fest each year promotes the City of Pacifica, attracts visitors, celebrates our community and raises funds for local community groups as well as the "Gift for Pacifica Fund." We strive to lessen our environmental footprint by moving towards zero waste. The Fog Fest was created in 1986 to promote Pacifica and to celebrate our marvelous coast. The last full weekend of September was chosen because historically the weather is unbeatable. The Fog Fest kicks off Saturday morning at 10am with the Discover Pacifica Parade, Marching Band Competition, and Sand Castle Contest. Arts and Crafts booths, Food and Beverage booths, Musical Entertainment, and a variety of activities begin after the parade. Admission is Free! Pets are not allowed at the festival. Please be kind to your animals, and leave them at home. The Fog Fest is proud to be a Green Event and offers free secured bike parking. Join us along Palmetto in Pacifica.

Watsonville Wetlands Restoration Day    - Santa Cruz County

Watsonville Wetlands Watch invites you to help restore wetland habitat. The work includes planting native plants, removing exotic invasive plants, and helping in our native plant greenhouse. We meet at the Fitz Wetlands Educational Resource Center located at the top of the Pajaro Valley High School campus (500 Harkins Slough Road) at 9 a.m. Please bring water, and wear layered work clothes, sturdy shoes and a sun hat. Sweet Springs Restoration Kickoff    - San Luis Obispo County

Saturday, September 24, 9am-1pm.

Join EcoSlo for this important milestone marking the beginning of restoration efforts on the new addition to the Sweet Springs Nature Preserve in Los Osos. Be among the first to help rescue this imperiled coastal habitat from invasive weeds, so that our native flora and fauna can thrive here once again. Everyone who looks forward to being able to enjoy an extended stroll through the preserve and a chance to revel in a spectacular view of the bay, Morro Rock and the sand spit needs to do their part. After some introductory remarks by community leaders, we will provide an overview of the proposed improvements including trails, boardwalk, interpretive signage and a viewing platform as we tour the site. Volunteers will then help pull veldt grass and other invasive weeds in preparation for planting at a later date. Everyone will be rewarded for their efforts with plenty of munchies and cold drinks. A few lucky volunteers will also walk away with free raffle prizes. Bring gloves, trowels and shovels, if you can ( but don't worry if you can't-we'll loan you ours). Lake Hemet Cleanup - Public Lands Day    - Riverside County

Participate in Santa Rosa & San Jacinto Mountains National Monument's National Public Lands Day event at Lake Hemet Picnic Area. Show that you care for your public lands by taking some time out to help improve them. Join us in a clean-up effort around Lake Hemet, which is home to our country's once endangered Bald Eagles, and many other wildlife species. Great event for families to participate in and we will play some Leave No Trace games after the clean-up. Trash bags and tools will be provided. Participants are welcome to bring up a lunch to picnic at the site afterwards. Meet at the US Forest Service, Lake Hemet Picnic Area off Highway 243, at the first parking lot. Upper Newport Bay ROOTS Day    - Orange County

Volunteers help remove invasives and plant natives in order to provide habitat for wildlife at the California Coastal Commission's Upper Newport Bay Project's restoration sites. Kayak Batiquitos Lagoon! Cleanup Event    - San Diego County

Saturday, September 24, and Sunday, September 25.

Enjoy a great kayak experience while helping to beautify the lagoon environment during Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation's clean-up day. Register early - this is the only time boaters are allowed on Batiquitos! Kayakers have two hours on the lagoon. Launch times are every hour from 7:30 a.m. until the last launch at 3:30 p.m. Please arrive 20 minutes before your launch time. Launch will be from the beach just off the park and ride lot at La Costa Avenue, east of I-5. You may use your own kayak, but you will be guided on the lagoon and must wear a properly fitted personal flotation device. Kayaks and life jackets can also be provided for you at no extra charge. One person (single) and two person (double) kayaks are available. Donation is $45 per person for a two-hour adventure. Your donation is tax-deductible. Refunds will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Please email any refund requests to kayakrefund@batiquitosfoundation.org. This event benefits the Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation and its work in providing environmental education and public nature walks. Anyone under age 12 must be accompanied by a guardian. Participate in Friends of Santee's River Park's National Public Lands Day to make a difference for the health of the section of the river that flows through Santee. Friends of the River Mouth Habitat Restoration    - San Diego County

Help us to preserve one of the last coastal wetland and dune habitats in California. An educational habitat walking tour is included. Activities to consist of native plant rescue, trail maintenance, watering and invasive plant removal. This is the perfect event for groups and families wishing to enjoy a day at the beach while helping to care for a rare and endangered habitat area. All tools and supplies provided. Tijuana River Action Month Beach Cleanup    - San Diego County

Saturdays, September 24, October 1, October 8, 9-11am.

Location to be announced. Visit website for details and liability waiver for this San Diego Coastkeeper-sponsored event, held with other organizations in the Tijuana River Action Network. You can also email Michelle Yount. BYOB--Bring Your Own Reusable Bag, Bucket, Bottle and Gloves. We will have supplies on hand, but volunteers should bring their own work gloves, reusable bag/bucket and/or reusable water bottle. Please wear comfortable clothes, closed toed shoes and sunscreen. All volunteers are welcome to participate and must sign a liability waiver, but volunteers under 18 must have a parent or guardian present at the beginning of the cleanup to sign a liability waiver before the minor can participate. For groups, please request a group liability waiver. (Email for details.) Pre-registration is not required unless your group is bigger than 25 people. Please be prepared to fill out a data card of all the trash you pick up-we need this information to help find the sources of trash on our beaches. If it is lightly raining, we will have the cleanup. Hike with a Ranger at the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge
   - San Diego County

Saturday, September 24, 8-10:30am.

Have you ever wondered about the wildlife in your community? Ever been to the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge in East San Diego county? Now is your chance. Come learn about California coastal sage scrub, and the unique species that live there. This month's hike will be located at the Par 4 Drive trail head on the Refuge, managed by the US Fish & Wildlife Service along the Sweetwater River and Cottonwood golf course. Parking for this area is on a residential road, so please carpool and take care not to block driveways. This hike is mild-intermediate, with some unsteady footing and inclines. Lake Solano Tour    - Solano County

Solano County Parks invites you on a guided tour of Lake Solano Park. It's a great opportunity for all ages to have fun, learn, and get healthy exercise! In addition to the tour, you can enjoy the beautiful scenery and wildlife at Lake Solano Park all weekend by renting a campsite (first-come, first-served). The tour is free, but parking is $5 per vehicle. BRING: $5 cash (for parking), water, snacks or bag lunch, bug repellent. Watershed Repair: Creek-side Habitat Restoration    - Los Angeles County

A once weed-choked upland of Dry Creek and Cold Creek has been transformed by a thousand beautiful native plants -- all planted by volunteers this year. Until the first rains of winter, the plants need to be watered to get through their first summer. So, we'll water and take out nearby trash. Hike to Devil's Gate    - Los Angeles County

Join the Arroyo Seco Foundation to discover a little-known trail through the Arroyo to Devil's Gate Dam and Hahamongna. The trail begins at the west side of Brookside Golf Course at Washington Blvd and West Drive above the Rose Bowl. Participants will hike along a shaded trail along the Arroyo Seco stream where the Arroyo Chub have been restored, beneath the 210 Freeway Bridge to the base of Devil's Gate Dam. You'll be able to see the face of the devil, first named by Benjamin Eaton in 1858. After that you'll be able to view Hahamongna from Devil's Gate Dam before returning to the point of origin. Point Reyes Birding Big Day    - Marin County

Tuesday, September 27, 7:30am-3pm.

Marin Audubon hosts this event. Keith Hansen, well-known wildlife artist, naturalist and enthusiastic and knowledgeable birder, will lead us on a Point Reyes Big Day. We will meet at 7:30 AM at the Bovine Bakery in Point Reyes Station. This is located on the "Main Drag," (Hwy.1) across from the Palace Market. Folks can Coffee down, Sugar Up and hit the rest room there before we make our way to the OUTER POINT. Weather permitting, we will most likely drive, (car-pool, if possible) to the Light House. After that, it will likely be a quick stop at Road Forks Pool and then the Fish Docks, looking high and low for winged treasures. Next it is off to Nunez Ranch, then Mendoza Ranch and Jr. Mendoza. We will then blast to Spaletta Slop Ponds and then to Drakes Beach for a well-deserved lunch. Bring a lunch and lots of water. For those that want to keep going, we may stop at Abandon Ranch and/or The RCA Station. The day can go as long as anyone wants, but for those that need a specific time to end, let's say 3ish. Sonoma Coast Trail Crew    - Sonoma County

Wednesday, September 28, 9am-3pm.

Coastwalk is partnered with the Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods to work on maintenance projects along the California Coastal Trail within the Sonoma Coast State Beach jurisdiction. State Park maintenance and trail personnel supervise work planning, ensure proper approvals/clearances are in place, and provide periodic training in trail building and maintenance techniques. We will be working on the beach access trails, weed whacking, brushing, and general tread/step maintenance. We meet 9 am at the Willow Creek Maintenance Yard. Birding Lake Merritt    - Alameda County

Wednesday, September 28, 9:30am-noon.

Join Golden Gate Audubon for this birding outing in Oakland. Meet at the large spherical cage near the Nature Center at Perkins and Bellevue. We will bird around there, then go up the garden path toward Children's Fairyland or walk down the lake toward Embarcadero, after which we will cover what we missed. With luck, the first of the fall migrants will be here in September. Take the 12, N, or NL bus to Grand and Perkins, and walk into the park on Perkins. Best parking is at boathouse lot near spherical cage. Entry, via Bellevue near Children's Fairyland, is probably free on weekday mornings, but if the kiosk is occupied when you arrive, buy a $2 (two-hour) ticket and park in the boathouse lot, where no one checks how long cars sit.

Joaquin Miller Park Nursery Event    - Alameda County

Join Friends of Sausal Creek for an afternoon of native plant propagation and nursery maintenance. Activities include sowing, transplanting, and cuttings.
