For 20 years, at least once a year, community members, neighbors, friends, staff and our fabulous Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve volunteers, have been walking Elkhorn Road picking up trash and recyclables. Typically, 35 volunteers worked for 3 hours, collecting thousands of pounds of trash and hundreds of pounds of recyclables. Often there are at least 25-30 tires and a few random containers of oil that also get picked up. In September of 2010, for the first time since hosting these events, we had no tires. And, for the first time in seven years there were also no hazardous materials to be found. What a huge success. Our "Road Clean-Up efforts" have been a part of Slough tradition almost since the very beginning. And we are once again happy to share that we will be recognizing National Estuaries Day and Coast Weeks with another clean up. Welcome and supply table at 1700 Elkhorn Road. Although non-native grasses still dominate the landscape, native vegetation is recovering slowly with the help of the National Park Service's resource management program. Other plants like the endemic Santa Barbara Island live-forever, shrubby buckwheat, chickory, and cream cups, add touches of color to the island's palette. The island is one of the most important seabird nesting sites within the Channel Islands, with 11 nesting species, including one of the world's largest colonies of Xantus's murrelets, and its rocky shores provide resting and breeding areas for California sea lions, harbor seals and northern elephant seals. The Yellow-billed Cuckoo is a State Endangered species and the western population is a candidate for federal protection. Once fairly common in riparian forests in California, it is now restricted to only a few breeding locations in the state, including the Sacramento River. The cuckoo is legendary in its secretive nature, more often heard than seen. The rush of catching a glimpse of one of these beautiful birds is something one won't easily forget.
