6th Annual Community Creek Cleanup

Saturday, October 1, 8am-noon. Community Creek Action Committee composed of Rotary Club of Redding, City of Redding, students from Simpson University, California Conservation Corps, Good News Rescue Mission, Henderson Neighborhood Association, Area Boy and Girl Scouts with a host of citizen volunteers are working in Henderson Open Space on Saturday, October 1, from 8am-Noon. This parcel in on the east bank of the Sacramento River and is approximately 60 acres in size. The climax riparian habitat is some of the finest between Shasta Dam and Sacramento. Unfortunately, the area in the very center of town has been neglected from almost half a century. Himalayan blackberry is fifteen feet tall. This non native plant as well as already treated Arundo, Ailanthus, Vinca and black locust will be mechanically removed in wide corridors perpendicular to the River. This opening will encourage public use, discourage illegal camping with consequent fires, and improve the native plant base which surrounds three ponds and valuable flood plain remnants. Wetland Wildlife Identification and History - Butte County Saturday, October 1, 9am-2pm. Here's your chance for fun while learning about Gray Lodge Wildlife Area's Wetland Wildlife and much more. Open to the public, this is part two of a three-part learning series. Emphasis will be on our Wetland Wildlife, including identification of waterfowl and other common species. We will review last session and build on the Valley's changes from the wildlife's perspective. Much of the day will be in an office setting, learning about the wetland wildlife, including their habits and habitat requirements. Birds will be the main focus of this discussion. Following the talk, we will spend time on the trail, experiencing the sights and sounds of the wetland wildlife. An ID book and binoculars are strongly recommended for this session. Lake Berryessa Birding Field Trip - Napa County Saturday, October 1. Join Altacal Audubon for this Napa County Big Day Trip, with Lake Berryessa Ranger and Altacal President Scott Huber for a full day of birding. Scott will lead the group to some of Napa County's best birding spots in the Lake Berryessa area. Participants departing the Chico area Saturday morning will meet at the Monticello Dam at 8:00 a.m., those staying in the Berryessa area Friday night can meet at 7 a.m. at the Cold Water Creek trailhead just below the dam. We'll spend the first part of the day birding around the lake and end the day birding the Napa River/Napa Valley and finish off with some wine tasting. Classroom and Field Raptor Identification Workshop

Saturday, October 1, 8am-noon. Marin Audubon hosts this event. The Golden Gate Raptor Observatory (GGRO) is dedicated to studying migrating birds of prey along the Pacific Coast. Over 250 volunteers and interns count, band and conduct radiotelemetry studies from mid-August through early December. Hawk Hill, in the Marin Headlands, is the best place to observe the fall migration. Allen Fish, the Director of GGRO, is a leading raptor biologist and a dynamic teacher. Allen has graciously agreed to present a condensed one-day classroom and field workshop on raptor identification for Marin Audubon. We will meet at 8AM at Bldg 1050 at Ft. Cronkhite for a 90-minute classroom Powerpoint presentation on identifying California raptors. At about 10AM we will drive up to Hawk Hill for a two-hour field class, with the option of staying up all day. Bring layered clothing for heat or cold. Bring lunch, snacks, water, hat, binoculars, and field guide. If raining or fogging we will still meet. Directions to Bldg 1050 Ft Cronkhite. Drive into the Marin Headlands via Alexander Avenue and the five-minute tunnel on Bunker Road. As you drive alongside Rodeo Lagoon, watch for the only building with a wooden porch just across from the foot bridge to Rodeo Beach. This is Building 1050. Park alongside the road. Chantey Sing 30th Anniversary Celebration - San Francisco County Saturday, October 1, 11:30am-midnight. Join the San Francisco Marime National Historic Park in celebration of the monthly chantey sing's 30th year! From 11:30am to 5:00pm, there will be performances of sea music at several venues on Hyde Street Pier, featuring singers and instrumentalists who have been involved with the chantey sings over the years. Free with national park passes. Arroyo Hondo Preserve Plein Air - Santa Barbara County Saturday, October 1, 11am-4pm. A very special art exhibition and sale featuring the work of many well-known local artists and Oak Group members. Stroll along the creek and meadows and watch the painters working en plein air, capturing the magic of the canyon. The Ortega Adobe Gallery will also be filled with beautiful new works for sale. Artists are generously donating 50% of sales to benefit the Arroyo Hondo Preserve. Bring your own brushes if you want to join in painting one of the most pristine spots on the Gaviota Coast. Ventura Stream Team - Ventura County Saturday, October 1, 9am. Come help Ventura Stream Team collect water quality data at 15 sites in the Ventura River watershed. The outing will last approximately 3-4 hours. Meet next to 239 W. Main Street in Ventura (across the street from Patagonia). From there we will travel by car to our sites. World Festival of Sacred Music: Honoring the Sea - Los Angeles County Saturday, October 1, 3-7pm. Honor the sea on the shores of Santa Monica Beach, featuring Agape International Choir, Halau Keali'i O Nalani with Halau O Lilinoe, Kinnara Taiko, La Canada High School Marching Band, Sacred Rhythm Drum Ensemble, Swing Brazil Tribe with Viver Brasil, and Ti'at Society. The groups will proceed down the beach and end with an enormous gathering on the water's edge. All are invited to sit in the sand as each group performs for the sea and places their offering on the Ti'at canoe. As we witness the Ti'at taking offerings and sacred blessings beyond the breaking waves, many will reflect on their commitment to be better stewards of this planet. In the late afternoon sun, each group spreads across the beach for individual performances. Join Save Our Beach for this cleanup. Look for blue tent in sand north of Belmont Pool. Please bring garden/work gloves, reusable water bottle and trash grabber so we make less trash. Please bring trash bags back to the blue canopy so we can consolidate bags and reuse them. We provide: free parking, bags, gloves, community service certificates and hand sanitizers. Keep in mind that parking at Nicks is not welcomed unless you are dining there so please park on the street or in the garage across the street underneath the Best Western Lighthouse Hotel. Bags and gloves will be provided but if you can, bring your own bucket and gloves and we'll be even more sustainable. World Animal Day at the Ravenswood Salt Ponds - San Mateo County Saturday, October 1, 9am-noon. Join Save The Bay at Ravenswood Pond in Menlo Park. We love the Bay animals, such as cattle egrets, salt marsh harvest mice, and bat rays, at the Ravenswood Salt Ponds! And we invite you to come out and enjoy the wonderful world of wildlife that is the San Francisco Bay. We are working hard to get our shoreline plots ready for their new residents, but first we have a lot of invasive weeds to clear out! Join Newport Bay Conservancy at Shellmaker Island for a Saturday morning walk along Bay Back Drive observing birds and plants. A side channel of the estuary runs adjacent to the multi-purpose road and there are great opportunities to view shorebirds, waterfowl and other birds. Bolsa Chica Tour - Orange County Saturday, October 1, 9-1:30am. Join Amigos de Bolsa Chica for an exceptional on-site presentation of the Bolsa Chica Story. Our docents will gather at the south lot of the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve, across the street from the main entrance to Bolsa Chica State Beach. Docents are stationed on or near the footbridge, a truly magnificent entrance to the restored Bolsa Chica wetlands. Tours begin every 15 minutes and five areas of interest are included in the presentation: history, birds, endangered species, ecology and restoration. This free tour is on a first come, first served basis. This is a wonderful opportunity for vacationers, students, small groups and local citizens to visit our valuable resource. RiverBlitz - San Diego County Saturday, October 1 through October 16. RiverBlitz is San Diego River Park Foundation's program to survey and collect data on the presence of trash, invasive plant species and park health issues along the San Diego River. This is a fun and informative way to see the river and learn about field data collection and documentation while making a difference for its future. Join Farallones Marine Sanctuary Association and San Francisco Whale Tours on a trip to the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary. The Association is hosting an exploration of the seas close around the islands, accompanied by some of our most experienced and knowledgeable naturalists. Birding Oro Loma Marsh - Alameda County Sunday, October 2, 8am. Join Ohlone Audubon for this event. By the end of September and early October our migrating shorebirds have returned to the bay. From the parking area we will walk out to the shore and head south along the San Lorenzo Trail, checking out both the shoreline as the tide recedes and the inner ponds where the birds have roosted during high tide (5:44AM!). This is a great chance to study those difficult shorebirds, including peeps, such as Western and Least Sandpipers, Dowitcher, yellowlegs, plovers, willets, godwits, Dunlin and Red Knots, to name some of our abundant wintering population. We also will watch the sky for different terns and gulls. This is an all walking trip, along a level path. We will meet at the end of Grant Avenue in San Lorenzo, by the water treatment plant. There is a staging area for parking on the north or right side of the road before it ends. A restroom is available. We expect to finish about lunchtime and some of us have known to eat in the Peruvian restaurant near the parking lot afterwards. To reach Grant Avenue in San Lorenzo, exit I-880 at Washington Avenue and head south on Washington Avenue. Turn right or west on Grant Avenue (there is a traffic light at this intersection, and Arroyo High School is nearby on the right) and proceed to the end of the road, towards the bay. Get as wet as you want to as Coastal Watershed Council volunteers assist Don Alley and his team in their annual fish seining effort in Soquel Creek Lagoon. Marj Saunders Park Cleanup - Alameda County Monday, October 3, 10am-noon Help Friends of Sausal Creek with the monthly site clean up! Activities include litter pickup, graffiti removal, removal of invasive non-native species such as vinca and Cape ivy, and maintenance of the planted areas. The park is located at Chelton Drive and Ascot Drive in Oakland (look for the painted rock that people have painted with birthday and special occasion messages for about 50 years!). Cal-IPC's 20th annual Symposium at the Granlibakken Resort in Tahoe City will celebrate Cal-IPC's success over the past twenty years while looking ahead to the future of invasive plant management, research, and policy. The theme of this year's Symposium is Invasive Plants and Ecological Change. We have invited speakers to address the myriad types of human-influenced changes to the natural environment that impact invasive plant management, including changes in soils, fire, nitrogen deposition, and, of course, climate change. Ven Explora la Naturaleza Conmigo - San Diego County Saturdays, Sundays, Wednesdays, 2-3pm Spanish-speaking docent-led tours of the Chula Vista Nature Center and Sweetwater Marsh National Wildlife Refuge. Free for members and free for all with paid admission to the Nature Center. Bay Interpretive Training Program - Santa Cruz County Starts Thursday, October 6, 9am-noon. Do you enjoy exploring with children in the outdoors? Helping them to discover and appreciate their natural environment? If you get excited investigating the beach, riding in a boat on the bay, peering under docks and rocks for animal life, or bird watching from the pier, the Berkeley Marina Volunteer Program could be for you! This unique Docent program, established 25 years ago, is designed to train volunteers to assist Naturalists in teaching the ecology of the San Francisco Bay Area to children ages 5 years to 18 years. Our environmental education programs include Low tide walks, the Research boat and Sailing programs, Summer Marine Biology and Boating programs. The training takes place Thursday and Friday mornings 9:00-12:00. Starting on Oct 6th 2011 and continuing until March, we ask for 14 hours a month commitment. There are two Saturday boat trainings. Trainings sessions will take place in the Shorebird Park Nature Center, 160 University Ave. at the Berkeley Marina. Training is ongoing and we encourage new people at any time.
