California Coastal Cleanup Day For Yacht Clubs and Marinas

Marina in the fog Ahoy! There are many actions boaters and anglers can take to ensure that safe and clean boating is part of their experience enjoying California waterways.

Results of more than 10 years of volunteer cleanup data indicate that 60 to 80 percent of shoreline trash comes from land-based sources. This debris can harm or kill aquatic organisms and also damage your vessel. Pollution also makes using the waterways less enjoyable for humans. Solving our water pollution problems requires everyone's involvement!

Boaters and boating facilities are known for being good stewards of the environment!

In 2011, California's boating community increased its contribution to the cleanup efforts. Working with the California Coastal Commission and the California Department of Boating and Waterways, two yacht clubs (Port Royal Yacht Club in Los Angeles County and Sequoia Yacht Club in San Mateo County) participated in California Coastal Cleanup Day and assisted the effort to further engage the boater community. Through this pilot program, information was collected to understand what needs and resources yacht clubs in particular require to participate in the Cleanup Event. Working along-side county-wide organizers Heal the Bay and the San Mateo County Water Pollution Prevention Program, the two yacht clubs organized participation from 63 enthusiastic volunteers and collected 1,267 pounds of trash and recyclables from the shoreline and on the water with non-motorized vessels.
