Orange County CCA Project (including Newport Beach Marine Life Refuge ASBS,  Irvine Coast Marine Life Refuge ASBS, Heisler Park Ecological Reserve ASBS, and Upper Newport Bay CCA)

These CCAs will receive a Prop. 50 grant for $400,000, and will use a portion of the funds to assess watershed and external impacts to the ASBSs/CCAs, including water quality concerns such as pollutant loading, source identification, and pollutant impacts. They will also include an intertidal ecosystem restoration component.  This work will result in a plan of recommended actions to protect the ASBSs/CCAs, including the implementation of additional Management Measures.

The grant recipients (City of Newport Beach and Laguna Beach) are currently planning the next phase of this project - an implementation grant that will move forward with these recommended actions.  Stakeholders including the City of Newport Beach, City of Laguna Beach, Coastal Commission, Regional Boards, California Department of Parks, Orange County Coastkeepers and the Coastal Conservancy had a kick-off meeting on October 3, 2005, and a follow-up meeting on November 22, 2005 to continue development of the pilot project. For more information, please contact Tracy Duffey, California Coastal Commission, at tduffey@coastal.ca.gov.
